SM, YG and JYP’s Profits for 2011 Revealed

SM, YG and JYP Entertainment, as publicly traded stock companies on Korea’s KOSDAQ, all recently submitted its 2011 audit report to the Financial Supervisory Service, providing the public with a glimpse inside the financial turnings of the three major entertainment agencies.

First, it was revealed that the combined income of the three major agencies for 2011 was a staggering 182 billion won (approximately 160 million U.S. dollars), an all-time record for the agencies.

SM recorded total sales of 109.9 billion won in 2011, making it the first time the company passed the 100 billion mark. The total sales for 2011 marked a 27.2 percent increase, or 23.5 billion won increase from 2010.

However, business profits were down 19.2 percent compared to 2009 as SM revealed its profit was 20.7 billion won for 2011. Net profits declined 32 percent from 2010 to 16.4 billion won for 2011. SM explained that the decline in profit was due to the rise in ratio of sales costs.

YG revealed its total sales for 2011 was 62.5 billion won, a 39.7 percent increase from 2010. Its business profit was 15.2 billion won and net profits 11.7 billion won to mark a 36.9 percent and 42 percent increase from 2010 respectively.

YG explained its sales increase were largely due to its artists activities in Japan and other royalties rising.

The case for JYP proves a bit trickier to assess. In 2010, Park Jin Young took over Rain’s former agency, J.Tune Entertainment which later became a separate agency, JYP. Though JYP Entertainment, which houses Park Jin Young, miss A, Rain and others, is a publicly traded company, JYP, which is currently home to the Wonder Girls, 2PM, 2AM and others, is not.

To get an accurate assessment, both companies need to be assessed but only JYP Entertainment, as a public company, disclosed its financial statements. JYP will be required to send in its financial audit report by the middle of April. Additional difficulties stems from the fact JYP Entertainment’s 2011 financial audit changed its financial settlement period from June to December providing only the financial statement for the July 1 to December 31 period.

A look at only JYP Entertainment’s six-month audit shows its total sales was 9.9 billion won, operating loss was 2.4 billion won and net loss during the term was 2.1 billion won.

K-Pop isn′t just for fun anymore - it′s a huge business!

YG to establish branch offices in US and Hong Kong

The company responsible for hot sensations, Big Bang and 2NE1, YG Entertainment is starting on their world-wide advancement. On the 15th, it was revealed that YG is closer to launching their branch offices, and would be establishing “YG USA” a branch office for their artists’ US advancement, while “YG Hong Kong” would be for their Asian market advancement.

YG has been preparing for world-wide advancement since spring of last year, a YG official reported, and this spring, they are hard at work in their preparations for the establishment of their branch offices in the United States and Hong Kong, and has made this announcement in advance of their formal launching.

The YG branch offices in the US and Hong Kong would be working hand in hand with the domestic agency to help the company’s artists in their overseas expansions. Unlike the traditional way of hiring competent coordinators in the country where they will be advancing into, this way of advancement would allow the artists to work with their own domestic company’s branch offices’ staff.

Meanwhile, YG has been extensively using YouTube and social networking systems like Twitter, as marketing tools. Through this, their artists like Big Bang, have topped the charts in iTunes and other international music charts, even without any overseas activities and promotions. With a branch office like YG USA, their artists like idol groups, Big Bang and 2NE1, would be supported by full-time personnel and the necessary manpower, to bring their music into a more international market, and is expected to also make their fanbases increase in number.

YG Entertainment releases first smartphone app

image

YG Entertainment
has released their very first smartphone app!
Home to artists like Big Bang
and 2NE1
, YG Entertainment has delivered an app that promises to be different from apps released by other entertainment agencies. Instead of creating multiple apps for each individual artist, YG has decided to compile all their artists’ info into one program.
As such, fans will have an easier time keeping up with their favorite YG artists’ TV appearances, as well as find their profile info and photos. Of course, the app will also include access to YG’s latest hits and MVs.
YG Entertainment will also release special content through the app, such as behind-the-scenes footage from their ‘15th Anniversary YG Family Concert‘. Reportedly, the app was created to celebrate the label’s 15th anniversary, allowing fans and stars to feel closer to one another with just one sweep.
The application ‘YG Family‘ will be available for free download on the Android Market and at the App Store in both English and Korean.
Check out 2NE1′s introductory message below, and click here

YG Family Concert: Bring it West?

“Family” concerts are pretty much the event of the year for stans of specific companies, whether it be YG,SM, or JYP. All of the idols and performers get together for a great session of kumbayah and fanservice, and the company walks away with wads of cash and a filled up stadium on the books. With the recent boom of the Hallyu wave  and renewed international interest in South Korean pop music, certain companies have dabbled in sending their artists to Western shores to cavort around and spread some family love. The most notable of them is probably SM Entertainment.

SM Town’s New York City and Paris adventure is probably the best proof of the power of the fan that there is; flash mob, and ye shall recieve. Oh, sure, K-pop didn’t magically blow up in the States and in Europe like the more loopy of the executives were probably wishing. Outside of California, it’s a bit more difficult to sell K-pop. But hey, they got a little publicity, and the groups got to see the flesh and blood proof of their efforts. Not only that, but it helped to cultivate a special breed of fan: the company-loyal mega fan. Fiercely defensive of their chosen group, they will do everything from spam the polls to buy up all those repackage albums, duets, and calendars put out by their idol “family” of choice. Any entertainment company knows that while you want to reel in new fans, it also behooves you to pay service to the old hats, and keep them loyal to the brand. The little gift of sending out groups to perform overseas accomplished just that.

In light of the recent YG Family concert that went down in South Korea, it’s time to ask: should YG consider branching out and holding some of those massive family concerts overseas like fellow idol industry juggernaut SM? No question about it, YG houses some of the bigger acts in K-pop. This company is no one-hit wonder. They’ve got multiple acts, from PSY to Big Bang, and there’d be no shortage of niche fans storming over to their nearest concert ticket retailer for the chance to see their favorites in person. Furthermore, YG has thus far enjoyed the blessing of having the groups that are the most marketable overseas. That might pull in a few of those periphery fans, the ones that aren’t loyal followers of K-pop but enjoy the most Westernized of the artists, and would pay to see them shake their stuff live.

YG is riding the crest of the Hallyu wave right now, and it would be foolish of them to pass that opportunity up. They’re a hot commodity at the moment, and more than doubled on their first day of stock trading in Seoul in November, despite the whole marijuana scandal going on with G-Dragon at the time. Granted, they didn’t get to where they are now by making foolish mistakes and throwing away money on useless ventures. There’s a definite financial burden involved in going overseas to perform and promote. They’re not just sending a group or two, they’re sending over nearly the entire company’s roster of artists plus stylists, tech people, backup dancers and singers, and managers aplenty. That’s a hefty airline, food, and hotel fee. Factor that into the not insignificant costs of setting up a concert in the first place, and it’s no wonder that YG hasn’t taken the plunge yet. Famed for their relative daring in the idol industry though they may be, I’ve spotted a trend of Papa YG actually tending to play it the safest as far as marketing goes. He takes long stretches of time in between releases. He’ll postpone releases until the end of the time if they’re not quite ready to be released yet. He plays it safe on his publicity campaigns. It’s no wonder he hasn’t been quite so eager to ship off all his pet groups. He’s not sure if they’re ready yet, and if he’s not quite sure, he won’t take the plunge.

It’s understandable, then, that the YG crowd hasn’t stormed Madison Square Garden yet. K-pop is not in the place where it would be risk-free to spring money on these kinds of high profile stunts. Support on the internet boards doesn’t necessarily translate to cold hard cash. YG should bear in mind, though, the possible benefits of throwing a bone to Western fans and performing in Europe or the States as a “family”. What do you think of YG’s potential for success in the West? Do you think it would be worth it to throw a YG Family show outside of South Korea?

IN MY OPINION HERE ARE A LOT OF YG STANS BUT THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE WHO DON'T APPRECIATE THIS MUSIC. TO ME THIS MUSIC IS VERY SPECIAL AND I DON'T WANT OTHER PEOPLE TO DESTROY THAT! I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE ONE YG FAMILY CONCERT IN EUROPE JUST TO MEE TAEYANG :)

YG Family Announcement Full interview

Big Bang's G-Dragon ("GD") and Taeyang joined YG Entertainment about ten years ago. And during that time, they have been members of Big Bang, the most popular idol stars and have also proven their capabilities as solo artists. So what significance has the launching of label YGEX, held on July 21, have for them? And what thoughts does Se7en have on advancing into Japan a second time? He is the one who made it known that YG has entered its prime and advanced into Japan before Big Bang did. Below are remarks from YG's artists Big Bang, Se7en, 2NE1 and Gummy at the launching ceremony for YGEX.

All the musicians at YG will be advancing into the Japanese music industry. How does it feel?
Se7en: It's fun. There were many times that I had felt lonely when I pursued my activities in Japan before because I was a solo artist but the atmosphere's great because we're here all together. I think I'll feel reassured from now on. And it feels great that our agency set up a label in Japan. I'm looking forward to it because we'll be able to help each other.

I think you'll feel different from others in that you'll be advancing into Japan once again.
Se7en: The last time I promoted myself in Japan was in 2007 so it'll be new in a lot of ways. It feels like I'm starting all over again and being here reminds me of my past activities.

Gummy, you'll be advancing into Japan for the first time. And it seems like your Japanese is very good. Did you learn the language with debuting in Japan in mind?
Gummy: I didn't learn Japanese because I had that in mind. But I've always hoped to expand my career into Japan. I'm actually not that good so thank you for the compliments.

2NE1, you'll be the first ones debuting in Japan under YGEX. How does it feel?
CL: We feel relatively less burdened because YG Family's name is already known in Japan. And we already have some fans in Japan. The many things that YG Family has accumulated on in Japan is helping a lot. We were supposed to debut in Japan in March but I think we were able to be much more prepared by it getting pushed back to September.

You sang your first Japanese single "I am the Best" in Japanese but you use Korean in parts. What's the reason for this?
CL: We sang the hook for "I am the Best" in Korean and even wore modernized hanbok in our music video. It's what we did to try to inform people of our culture.

What's the difference going to be between YGEX and YG's style?
Se7en: YG has its own defined style so I think we'll try to differentiate our music from other artists' music while maintaining that style of ours.

And what do you think is YG's unique style?
T.O.P: Whether it comes to music or style, we try to do things that are ahead one step of what others do. Mr. Yang Hyun-suk thinks about this too a lot as well. I think it's important that our music is one step ahead of others' yet stays faithful to the fact that our music is different from music that others do.
GD: I'd like Big Bang or YG Family's music to become acknowledge for our music rather than create a Hallyu boom. I think trying to get more and more Japanese people like our music, even if we started underground, would be good too. Whether it's Big Bang or YG's music, we want to be confident about them and gain a lot of experience.

You'll be competing with J-pop musicians once you advance into the Japanese market. Are there any artists you consider competition?
Se7en: Seungri has that all figured out. (laugh)
Seungri: That's my field of expertise. (laugh) I actually don't think any artist overlaps with Big Bang in terms of style. And people already in the Japanese market have embraced us as well, saying that they haven't seen a group with our style. So I'm hoping that'll help with our activities in Japan.

Big Bang, do you have plans to promote yourselves in Japan as solo artists as well?
Seungri: We're all working on our solo albums in Korea right now so I'm thinking that us pursuing solo activities in Japan may become a possibility within this year. And the members of our group can also act and appear on entertainment shows so I'm thinking that we'll be able to pursue a wider range of activities.

Are there no detailed plans regarding your group or solo careers?
GD: We haven't set a date yet. Everybody is focusing on the level of completion of their songs so whoever has a better product will come out first.

Do you have plans to form a new unit?
T.O.P: We haven't decided on anything yet. But that's a possibility that could come about whenever.
Taeyang: If we make music that we agree on after talking about music, we just naturally come to make music together.
Seungri: I recently asked Taeyang to work with me but he left the room. That made me very sad. (laugh)
Taeyang: I never left the room. (laugh)

But Taeyang's solo album or GD&T.O.P and Big Bang's mini albums have gotten response in the North America region without any promotion. Don't you want to advance into the U.S. market as well?
T.O.P: I think that for now, it's more important that we make people want to look for us than us setting up detailed plans for our activities there. I think it's important that we make them be interested in us by making them want to watch more of the music videos YG makes.

Taeyang, you recently worked with famed U.S. producer The Underdogs. Do you not have plans to expand your career into the U.S.?
Taeyang: Working with The Underdogs was a great experience. But we worked together because we agreed with each other on the music we want to do rather than it being for my U.S. debut. I may once I'm fully prepared but it's hard for me to say, as of now, whether that'll happen.

Is there anything you'd like to say to Daesung who isn't here today?
GD: We wanted to be able to come here together so we're sorry to see that it couldn't happen. And we're a team so I think we root for him with our heart and gaze rather than words. We're always worrying about him and he's always worried about us so I'm definitely hoping that we'll be able to pursue our activities together someday.

Se7en, you've watched YG grow. How do you feel about the establishment of YGEX?
Se7en: It's been 15 years since YG Family came about and as someone who's been with them, I'm very happy to be here right now. I'm proud of our agency as well and I think it's great that we can compete with each other in a positive way. Our agency is one in which both individuals and teams can grow so I think you could look forward to the next 15 years.

AAAAYYYYYY!!!!! WE ARE SOOOO EXCITED AND CAAAAN'T WAIT TO FINALLY LISTEN TO THE NEW ALBUM OG OUR SUPERSTAAAAR!!!!! HE IS SOOO HAPPY THAT HE COULD WORK WITH THE UNDERDOGS!!!!
