At this year's 21st Annual Seoul Music awards, Big Bang is nominated in 2 categories, "Popularity" and "Bonsang.

There are other categories in the ceremony, though out of the main 3, those are the 2 Big Bang is nominated for. For the Bonsang award, winners are chosen based on album and digital sales, online voting popularity and a final judging from the award ceremony judges.

The Bonsang is the main award for outstanding achievement in music that year. Not to be confused with Daesang, which is the Grand Award for achievement in music that year. Big Bang won the Daesang in 2008. There are 10 Bonsang winners and the Daesang winner is chosen from them. Big Bang won the Bonsang in 2008 and 2009.

Arirang TV asks foreign fans to pick the best of K-Pop in 2011

Arirang TV, an English-language Korean television network, is asking its foreign viewers to vote for their favorite musicians, actors, and songs in such categories as best rookie, best couple from a drama, and the artist they most want to visit their country. Fans can easily sign up for the website and vote, as Arirang is available in both English and Korean.

The voting period lasts until December 31st, and it appears Arirang will select winners from the voting pool, who will then receive prizes.

Big Bang’s “The Best of Big Bang” tops Oricon daily

On December 14th*, Big Bang‘s best-of album, “The Best of Big Bang“, was reported to have topped Japan’s Oricon daily chart!

The best-of album includes a series of their hit tracks like “Haru Haru”, “Tonight”, “Hands Up”, “Tell Me Goodbye”, “Baby Baby”, “Somebody to Love”, and “Emotion”.

The album was originally scheduled for release in November, but was pushed back a month. Although it was their first release in a while, the album had no difficulty selling over 10,000 copies on its first day alone, thereby proving their consistent popularity.

Big Bang will be participating in the 15th anniversary YG Family concert on January 7th and 8th in Osaka.

A special online voting system allowed fans to log into MTV and pick the ‘best’ entertainers of the year. Big Bang and Super Junior triumph over Britney Spears in 2011

Boy groups Big Bang and Super Junior garnered a lot of international interest in 2011, having beat out international pop icon Britney Spears to achieve their titles as world stars.

First, Big Bang attended the 2011 MTV EMA‘s which were held in Belfast, Northern Ireland back in November.

The boys were nominated under the “World Wide Act Asia Pacific Nominees” category for the EMAs and won, advancing to the “Worldwide Act Nominees” category alongside famous international artists such as Abdelfattah Grini(Africa/India/Middle East), Lena (Europe), Restart (Latin America), and Britney Spears (North America).

Big Bang stunned the world, and themselves, by winning the award. They became the first Korean artist to ever achieve such a title, and Big Bang made their mark in K-pop history.

Britney Spears is a mega pop star, having gifted the world with hit after hit, and over the years has built a phenomenal fan base with her sexy performances and vocal talent. The fact that Big Bang won the award despite being up against the international superstar was especially noteworthy, and proved that they were qualified to be titled ‘world star’s.

The boys of Super Junior have also surpassed Britney Spears.

On December 6th, mashable along with twitter aggregate data analysis website What The Trend released their annual ‘Top 10 Twitter Trends‘ list. The company analyzed over 207,518 hash tags to identify the top trending topics of 2011.

Under the ‘Top 10 Trending Topic’s on Twitter’, popular idol group Super Junior ranked 4th under the artists category and 7th overall, just above Britney Spears and even the devastating Japan earthquake.

Under the artists category, the boys were #4 behind world-famous artists Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and the Jonas Brothers, respectively.

Big Bang and Super Junior are no longer idols only within the boundaries of Korea. They have made themselves known to a growing international audience receiving global applause and praise, and they are drawing high attention as fans are anxious to observe their next big ventures overseas

In the video they mainly say that Kpop is the new phenomenon and that a lot of people got to know it. About Big Bang they said that their concerts were sold out in 10 minutes. Further they talk about the style in Kpop that it's very funky and colorful. Next topic were the fans and the MC was surprised that the asian fans are very quiet and don't scream around like the german ones. They didn't say much about Big Bang -.- Sorry for the rough translation but it was nothing important to to watch it again! They should have mentioned Big Bang more!

2.4 Million Netizens Worldwide Vote for "2011 SBS MTV Best of the Best"

Fans all over the world are busily casting their votes for the "2011 SBS MTV Best of Best" poll, which will determine the most-loved artists of the year. As of December 7, 2.4 million netizens are reported to have participated in the various categories the polls offer.

Voting began on November 28 and the competition still remains fierce amongst fans. In the "Artist of the Year" category, SM Entertainment labelmates DBSK and Super Junior are going head to head, while in the "Best Female" category, SNSD and 2NE1 are neck to neck. In the "Best Male" category are U-Kiss and GD&TOP.

The "Best New Artist" award is seeing a three-way competition among B1A4, Block B, and Boyfriend, while the "Top Rival" category has Super Junior and Big Bang with the hottest votes.

In the "Global Star" category are SHINee, Big Bang, and DBSK, while the "Girl Group" category has 2NE1 and SNSD. Super Junior and Big Bang are also matched up against each other in the "Boy Group" category.

Some other fun votes that can be cast in the "Idol" part of the poll are questions like "Idol Most Likely to Succeed With a Solo," "The Most Intelligent Idol," "Best Atmosphere Maker," and "Idol You Want to Invite to a Christmas Party."

Yahoo Japan recently released data for the top searched terms in 2011 for male entertainers, female entertainers, and sport athletes. From the list of 20, a whopping 18 spots were filled by Koreans.

The ranking took the aggregate data from search queries on Yahoo Japan from January 1st to October 31st. Out of the top 20, only Lady Gaga at #5 and Avril Lavigne at #17 were non Koreans:

“We visited the University of Toronto a while back, back in our home city (Toronto, Canada). Not only did we meet our fans, but also K-POP fans, as well. Singer Sung Si Kyung mentions Taeyang on radio

Singer and DJ Sung Si Kyung has always talked highly of Taeyang and how "cool" he is. He even once said on radio that "even if Taeyang were to smell or wear sling pants, it's ok because he's cool." Aside from mentioning him on shows, he also covered some of Taeyang's songs like You're My (on Chocolate) and I Need A Girl (at his concert).

Last November 19, he and Alex talked about Taeyang again on his radio show, Music City. Here's how their conversation went:

SSK: We just listened to Ne-Yo’s “Because of You.” It’s a very good song.
A: Yes.
SSK: This kind of music is great, too. You should try something like this, Alex.
A: I actually want to try something like this. So on the next album -

YG's Listing Goes Public, and Yang Hyun Suk’s Total Share Value Soars

On November 23, YG Entertainment listed its shares on South Korea’s junior stock market, KOSDAQ, and saw its per-share value more than double on its first day of trading. As a result, Yang Hyun Suk, the founder and chairman of YGE, now holds nearly $140 million USD in stock value.

YGE shares were valued at 78,200 won ($78 USD) per share in the morning Tuesday, which is more than double its IPO price of 34,000 won ($34 USD). Yang Hyun Suk, with 47.7 percent ownership of YGE stocks, is estimated to own around $140 million USD in stocks, making him the second highest-valued person in the Korean entertainment industry, after SM Entertainmen’s Lee Soo Man who has an estimated stock of $220 million USD.

 Market officials expect YGE shares to increase to around 80,000 won ($80) per share, but due to the company’s heavy reliance on Big Bang, who accounts for more than half of their total sales, the price may not see substantial increase in the short term. In comparison, JYP Entertainment’s Park Jin Young is estimated to own approximately $16 million USD in company shares, while Key East Entertainment’s Bae Yong Joon’s total share value is around $17 million USD.
