Taeyang's songs get banned?!

Songs of the popular artists Se7en, Taeyang, and Seotaiji have been deemed inappropriate for youth audiences.

According to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security on October 5th, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family’s Youth Protection committee have made a verdict that Taeyang’s ‘Move‘, ‘After You Sleep‘, and ‘Take It Slow‘ off his SOLAR album were inappropriate for children.

In addition to Taeyang’s songs, Se7en’s “Drips” from his Digital Bounce album and Seo Taiji’s “F.M Business” from his 2009 Seo Taiji Band Live Tour The Möbius have been banned for having sexually suggestive lyrics. Taeyang’s ‘After You Sleep’ was also deemed inappropriate for expressing lyrics regarding harmful drugs.

Another artist effected by this sweep of bans is the hip-hop duo, 2Wins. Their songs “Tear Up” and “Lady is Mine” have been banned for having vulgar lyrics.

These decisions will take effect on October 12th.

The albums containing these songs will be labeled, like the parental advisory stickers here in the US, and those under the age of 18 will not be able to purchase the albums. Also these songs will not be allowed to broadcast prior to 10PM.

SOLAR TOPS THE CHARTS!

After Taeyang's first winning moment for his new song 'I'll Be There' - it has been revealed that his SOLAR [International Album] has topped this week's Gaon Album Charts. Gaon Charts is Korea's official chart ranking that compiles sales from legal downloads and digital sales.

Further more, his single 'I'll Be There' has landed on the 16th slot, after increasing 33 slots this week.

Taeyang's international album ranks in top 10 of iTunes charts

Big Bang member Taeyang's international album has entered the top 10 of Apple's iTunes R & B / Soul records charts in several countries.

According to the official iTunes website, Taeyang's international release, which simultaneously went on sale locally and internationally yesterday, has placed at No. 2 in Japan, No. 3 in Australia, No. 5 in Canada and No. 6 in the United States.

The new album, featuring the title track "I'll Be There," contains ten previous releases as well as two new songs and a bonus DVD with all of his music videos and behind-the-scene-footage.

Taeyang had entered the iTunes chart for the first time in July with his first full-length album "Solar," placing atop Canada's chart and third on the US chart, making him the Asian artist to reach the highest ranks on the charts.

Born Dong Young-bae, Taeyang was the first member of Big Bang to debut as a solo artist, releasing his first mini-album "HOT" in May 2008. He has produced various hit songs including "Prayer," "Look Only At Me" and "Wedding Dress."

He had promoted his first studio release "Solar" and the title track "I Need a Girl" last month and is busy preparing for his first solo concert to be held at Seoul's Kyung Hee University on September 25 and 26.

Taeyang’s solo career began last year when he released the digital singles “Where U At” and “Wedding Dress”, after that came the full solo album of “I Need A Girl” and now he is soon releasing “I’ll Be There”.

As planned, this coming August 19th Taeyang’s new single “I’LL BE THERE” is expected to be released in Korean in Korea as well as the English version in foreing-related sites.

“I’LL BE THERE” broadcasting activities are scheduled to begin during this weekend’s Music Core on the 21st however, the album release date has inevitably been postponed for nearly a week, until August 25th.

The reason it was delayed was because two versions of the music video for “I’LL BE THERE” will be produced.

Taeyang to release international album, Solar concert postponed!

When we read this we coulnd't believe that!!!!!!!!!

YG Entertainment representative Yang HyunSuk announces the postpone
of TaeYang's upcoming concert.

He posted up an announcement on YGE homepage on 2nd August about
TaeYang who is currently promoting 'I Need A Girl' and also his
upcoming concert.

He wrote, "TaeYang will end the promotions for this song 'I Need A
Girl' on MBC Music Core on 14th August. And coming 19th August, there
will be a new album release."

According to representative Yang, the new album will be an
international release album. And the album will include 2 new songs
never released in TaeYang's earlier album. And the title song will be
'I'll Be There' composed and written by Teddy. There will also be
English version of 'Wedding Dress' included.

Yang HyunSeok added, "The upcoming independent concert set to take
place on 4th and 5th September will be postponed due to Big Bang's
Japanese promotions and CF filmings."

Yang HyunSeok also explained that they have yet to find an appropriate
concert venue for the upcoming concert, meant for audience aged 19
years and above.

New critic for SOLAR

However, I did not mean to say I have any dissatisfaction about the results of the contest since different situations and conditions would contribute to different results. I still had some worries. I don’t know whether I thought about it too much or not but I worried that the award might mislead Taeyang? Would he be complacent of himself? Nevertheless, after I have listened to ‘SOLAR”, I was relieved that Taeyang is still Taeyang. He proved that my worries really had no grounds because through this album, we can clearly see his growth.

My comment on this album can be concluded like this: ‘just abandon the meaningless over-expectations.’ It does not mean I look down upon on Taeyang. What I mean is to keep the expectation that we first had on his albums. Do we have expectations on him because of his sophisticated singing skills? Or do we have expectations on him for he is a R&B/Soul singer who has always been trying to upgrade himself? No, not because of those, we wait for him because inside him are ‘possibilities’.

The pity of owning an extremely beautiful voice but not being able to let it shine in the group activities is shown when Taeyang is on the stage and in the interviews. This light sorrow, coupled with his own ambition (which is different from that of the whole band) on music and his ability which convinces us that he could achieve his ambition all leads to our expectation. In other words, as we see the ‘flames’, we want them to ‘glow’ brightly and fully.Because Trey Songz is a mainstream R&B singer, he also has the ability to perform a wide variety of songs from slow jam to pop. Just listen to his new album ‘Ready’, you can find songs belonging to slow jam like ‘neighbours know my name’ and relaxing R &B songs like ‘I Invented Sex’ and ‘Say Aah’. There are even close-to-pop songs like ‘ I Need a Girl’.

This is the same case in Taeyang’s album. Produced by Teddy, the smooth flow of theR&B song ‘Move’ reminds us of the style of ‘The Runners’. ‘You’re My’ and ‘Take it Slow’ can be classified under slow jams while we can feel the team spirit of the production team ‘Stargate’ through the pop song, 'Just A Feeling’. All of these songs of different categories co-exist in the same album. Then, “I Need a Girl’ (with the same name of Songz’ song) is the song dedicated to his female fans by the boy, Dong YongBae, who does not have any love experience is an urban R&B song.

If we only consider the local market of Korea, Taeyang is really unique. We might want to know how many Korean singers can sing both R&B/Soul and pop songs along with their own characters and at the same time are able to ‘digest’ the songs well according to the appropriate atmosphere. The answer is obvious. Although we do not know whether his standard will drop or rise, Taeyang’s competitiveness is still very strong.

SOLAR proves us a lot of things. It proves that YG’s production team is still producing good soul music; it proves that Taeyang has been practicing his singing continuously; it also proves where Taeyang’s (as a musician) charisma and strengths lie. But the most important in this album proves he is ‘growing’. Although Taeyang is not yet the best, he has been working hard to become the best. I sincerely hope that I can see him grow into maturity in the near future.

If we really have to compare ‘SOLAR’ with other albums, we could say it is a Korean version of an American R&B musician Trey Songz. As Taeyang sometimes also use ‘Yup’ as Trey Songz does, he can be regarded as a perfect fellow of Trey Songz. When listening to their music in details, their music share a lot similarities. To be precise, Taeyang is a purified version of Trey Songz or a 15-year-old version. It is because for some reasons, Taeyang can never sing songs like ‘Neighbours Know My Name

.’

As one of the members of the evaluating committee, if my own opinion could represent the opinions of all my fellow members, I would choose ‘Over’ to be the winner of the Best R&B/Soul song of the 6th Korean Music Awards. (Note: Taeyang claimed that award in 2008). Although I was not against ‘Look Only At Me’ gaining appreciation from my committee, I did not agree that the album HOT which was awarded for the ‘album award’ could depict the whole picture of Taeyang’s effort throughout that year. This was only the result attributing by ‘no competitors’ coupled with ‘giving encouragement to the singer’.

New Critic for SOLAR^^

Earlier this year, the webzine that I belong to, decided to select important domestic/overseas albums from the last 10 years (from 2000 to 2009). Personally, I contemplated which albums to pick beforehand, just for fun. I’m not interested in rankings, but spent more time thinking of standard. Above everything, I based my choice on positions and contexts of the albums rather than the musical execution because I wanted to break away from the prejudices like “must listen albums in the history of Korean popular music.” Actually, the point is, Taeyang’s HOT album is among them.

Taeyang is an interesting person. Because he has the precarious position of being a solo musician even though he is in an “idol” group, he is facing the dilemma of producing “authentic” music rather than imitating, that most popular Korean musicians encounter. Taeyang combines the “natural things” and “trained things” in his voice, in a harmonic and successful way and that has formed the basis of why people have so many expectations from Taeyang. I wrote on my personal blog, at that time, that “depending on his success or failure, the prejudice and concepts we’re are reminded from typical Korean singers (including songwriters, authenticity, management companies and idols), will be changed” and my thoughts have not changed from this yet.

It is the same about SOLAR, which he recently released. I hoped that there would be more songs like “Look Only at Me” but even though there weren’t, I can’t say I haven’t understood what he’s trying to put forth with this album. There is a strong impression that he tried to maintain a balance between what the company (or what people wanted) and what he wanted. Growing up consistently is more important than shooting up too fast. So this is a good start.

But there is also another reason Taeyang is interesting. I think the common impression people get from him is that hes a “polite and prudent boy” and “a many who has never dated” and I think these two images make “idol authenticity”. Of course, “idol authenticity” is a word I made up. This is strange (I don’t mean if idols are authentic, but I mean just the word “authentic” is strange). Actually, I accept this strange word because in essence it’s Taeyang. Even though he is an idol, people consider him to have a “musically earnest” attitude and a singer who has much potential and growth. Taeyang even changes our popular beliefs about idols by stating in an interview, “But I want to go out [date]“. Normally, it seems this boy’s only hobby is music, and who has never had the chance to go out and “flirt” and most people really believe this is so about him and about idols. Whether its just the public’s imagination or its actually so, the pureness and innocence we get from him, cause us to regard him as a different singer from any other idol group members.

 

This authentic aura about him doesn’t only make Taeyang’s musical outcomes seem like an extension of his pureness, but also works as the basis of making people expect him to grow exceptionally as an artist and overcome the limitations of idol members. It may be only my personal thoughts (because I, too, am a personal fan of Taeyang’s pure smile and earnest attitude).

 

Nevertheless, the reason I pay attention to Taeyang’s path and music, personally and critically, is because he is synchronous with a ‘boy’s face’. That is, he synchronizes a popular music with being an idol. So then, criticizing popular music may not be possible with the naked eye.

We’re witnessing a person who is realizing his dream from being an idol to his current stage. Taeyang’s SOLAR is this proof. His vocals have become more expressive and deeper and the musical breadth is much wider. In a few words, it’s a good R&B album. There is obviously a strong impression that he tried to maintain a balance between what the company wanted and what he wanted. So sometimes, it sounds simple. But even though songs like “Look Only at Me” are not on this album, I can’t say that I haven’t understood him till now. I believe that having accuracy in shooting with consistency is more important than shooting very high all at once (in other words, he says that its better to rise slowly than be at the top all at once). So I think it’s a good start.

YG can aim to reach the R&B Billboards with  an ideal model in Taeyang who can vouch and represent the companies growing sound technology. The producers didn’t just make this album in a rush or dull. Rather, there is an elastic rhythm and polished eclectic melody to the voice of the meticulous entertainer who puts his heart and soul into every breath of dancing and singing. This is an unconventional album. It is a piece of the company, the singer and the audience, where everyone can share their peace and satisfaction. It’s the buttery lyrics of “I Need a Girl” stand out alone.

If G-dragon is Big Bang’s everchanging hairstyle, then Taeyang is Big Bang’s hidden abs. After the short novel “HOT”, the first full length book “SOLAR” is a piece that shows YG’s producing ability which takes on and absorbs American R&B. Taeyang’s capability to control his own musical ambitions were thoroughly harmonized in this album. Besides, it shows the sensual side of young males reaching the age of 20.
