2014 has been a strong year for K-pop internationally, with Girls’ Generation, EXO, and 2NE1 all charting albums on the Billboard 200. Now it looks like BIGBANG star Taeyang is set to follow, with his latest solo album Rise currently ranking high on iTunes charts across the world.
So far, Rise has hit No. 13 on the official U.S. iTunes Album chart, and No. 1 on the R&B/Soul albums chart. It’s also reached No. 10 on the Mexican Itunes album chart, No. 11 in Canada, and the top twenty in Australia and New Zealand.
K-pop might not be getting the same kind of global coverage that it was a few years ago when the K-pop wave was at its peak, but it’s extremely clear that the genre still has a very dedicated international fanbase. It’s no easy feat to get a Korean-language album on the Billboard charts from digital sales alone and zero promo.
