When the summer with two typhoons was about to end, I met Taeyang. On the day of the interview in September, Taeyang has been rehearsing with the concert band until four in the morning; the rehearsal hadn't finish and Taeyang woke up still a bit tired, but still with his unique smile.
As Taeyang has been busy with BIGBANG as well as solo activities, we haven't had the opportunity to know his story and his views on music; so our first question is direct: what is the biggest change after his solo in 2008?
Taeyang responded simply, "I aim to be a singer, and has been working so hard I didn't feel any changes." He then explained "I spent a lot of time worrying when preparing for the album, I just know that from BIGBANG until now, there are still a lot of things I didn't know! If that counts, then it must be a change. There are a lot of things I want to do, but lately they keep increasing..."
F. You spent half of your life at YG. As part (of the company) do you feel any significant change?
Taeyang I feel a lot during the recent move to the new place, there are more new produce, with the others and Jiyong we're more like that... (not sure what he meant) Activities wise, both me and Jiyong thinks we are the Daegam spirit*.
F. Daegam spirit* at 23? (smile)
Taeyang But it's true! (smile)
F. Pardon for asking this, but you're nearly 30. Aren't you scared?
Taeyang Very scared.
F. Why so?
Taeyang Let's just say one, two years ago, I've never thought of how scary it is. However, during the process of making the music I want in my solo activities, I ran into a lot of problems! It's as if I drew a very big picture the past few years and really want to finish it quickly, and now is trying to make the picture 3D. I'm worrying about where to start and how to draw. I think too much about that and developed a phobia in solving (the problem), but I'm not really scared of problems. I will have faith and try to solve it.
F. How positive! I didn't want to talk about things that worry you. From what I know you're not a strong person, so how are you like before your debut?
Taeyang The bigger the disappointment, the happier you are! That's what I think, but I cannot choose to give up.
F. Do you ever tried to compensate for those times?
Taeyang Yes.
F. Can you prove that you are not the type to be lead by the nose?
Taeyang When I release the EP in 2008, I have a lot of suggestion. Even the smallest things are decided by me. It's not because of request I made it that way, but because I am trying to develop in that direction.
F. Wow! That's respectable.
Taeyang In either ways I feel pressured, and also carry responsibilities.
